How Deep Should Fence Posts Go? Concrete Setting Standards Explained
A fence is only as good as what's underground. The panels, the pickets, the hardware, none of it matters if the posts shift, lean, or heave out of the ground after a few winters. Post depth and concrete-setting method decide a fence's real lifespan, and they're also the two things cheap, rushed installs cut corners on.
Here's what a properly set post actually needs, and why.
The general rule for post depth
The standard rule across the fence industry: at least one-third of the total post length goes in the ground. For a 6-foot-tall fence, that usually means an 8-foot post with roughly 2 to 2.5 feet buried. For taller fences, or gate posts that take extra stress from swinging weight, going deeper than that one-third minimum is common practice.
A few factors push that depth further:
- Frost line. In climates with real winter freeze, the hole needs to go below the local frost depth, or freeze-thaw cycles can heave the post upward over time. A local contractor or building department can tell you the frost line depth for your area.
- Soil type. Loose, sandy, or fill soil holds a post less securely than dense clay or compacted soil, so shallower posts in soft ground lean more over time. Rocky or heavily compacted subsoil can also limit how deep a hole can practically go, which sometimes means adjusting the approach instead of the depth itself.
- Wind and gate load. Taller privacy fences catch more wind, and gate posts carry the twisting force of a swinging gate every time it opens. Both call for going deeper and using a wider hole than a standard line post.
Hole diameter matters as much as depth
A common mistake: digging a hole barely wider than the post itself. The general guideline is a hole diameter roughly three times the width of the post, so around 10 to 12 inches for a 4-inch post. That leaves room for a solid concrete collar around the post instead of a thin shell that can crack away from the wood or metal over time.
Concrete vs. gravel vs. tamped soil
Not every post needs a full concrete footing. More concrete isn't automatically better.
- Concrete is the standard for gate posts, corner posts, and end posts, anywhere the post takes lateral stress. It's also common for line posts on privacy and ornamental fences where maximum rigidity matters.
- Gravel base with tamped soil backfill is a legitimate, widely used method for line posts on lighter fencing, particularly split-rail and some wood post-and-rail styles. A few inches of gravel at the bottom of the hole helps drainage and keeps less water sitting against the base of the post.
- Drainage still matters even with concrete. A concrete footing poured flush against untreated wood, with no gravel underneath and no crown sloping water away from the post, traps moisture against the base and speeds up rot from the inside of the collar out. Sloping the top of the concrete away from the post, so water sheds instead of pooling, is standard good practice.
Curing time before the fence takes load
Concrete reaches usable strength within a day or two, but full cure takes closer to a week under normal conditions. That's why a competent install schedules panel or rail attachment, and any gate hanging, after the posts have had time to set, not the same day the concrete goes in. Rushing this step is one of the most common causes of a post shifting out of plumb before a fence is even finished.
Why this step gets skipped
Post setting is slow, labor-heavy work that happens entirely underground. It's invisible in the finished product, so it's easy to shortcut without the property owner ever knowing, until years later when a post starts leaning. Depth, hole width, concrete placement, and cure time all take real time on the clock, and cutting any of them saves an installer a few hours per job. The fence looks the same on day one either way. The difference shows up in year three or four.
This is also why post spacing and material choice affect how forgiving a fence is of marginal post work. A wood fence or iron fence with heavy panels puts more demand on each post than lighter styles like split-rail or chain link, where the load per post is lower and the setting standards can be a little more forgiving without compromising the fence.
What to ask before you hire
If you're getting quotes for a new fence, ask directly how deep the posts will be set, what diameter the holes will be, and whether concrete or gravel fits your fence style and soil conditions. A straight answer to those three questions tells you a lot about how the rest of the job will get handled.
